Mixed Anomalies of Magnetic Symmetries.

't Hooft anomalies are amazingly useful features of global symmetries in quantum field theory, but are notoriously subtle and can be difficult to detect. In this work we resolve the open question of when there exists a mixed 't Hooft anomaly between two different types of symmetry in bosonic QFTs, referred to as "electric" and "magnetic" symmetries. We find the condition for the anomaly to exist purely in terms of geometric and topological data of the field space and its symmetries, and completely characterize the topological form of the anomaly by deriving the anomaly TQFT related by inflow. We also discuss approaches to the case when the magnetic symmetry becomes categorical, which occurs when multiple distinct homotopy groups of the field space give rise to solitonic excitations.
