Bilayer photonic crystals: Weyl points and Moire flat-bands.

I will propose configurations to realize exciting topological phenomena in the bilayer 1D photonic crystals. I will show that the relative shift between the upper and lower layer could be viewed as an extra artificial wave vector of synthetic momentum space. As a consequence, we obtain the 2D topological band structure from a 1D physical system. The interpretation brings new insights into the topology aspects of the band theory of photonic crystals. By tuning inter-, intra-layer coupling parameters, we obtained many fantastic behaviors in topological band theory. We demonstrated the Weyl points merging, topological Chern insulator, topologically protected edge modes, adiabatic topological pumping with simple photonics configurations.  I will also examine the Moire configurations of two uni-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal slabs with mismatched periods. Most interestingly, we obtain magic distances corresponding to the emergence of photonic flat bands within the whole Brillouin zone of the Moire superlattice. I will demonstrate that these flat band modes are tightly localized within a Moire period.
